Having a successful and satisfying career in almost all fields requires a mixture of creativity, confidence, competence, motivation, drive, ingenuity, persistence, and patience.
It can also require facing frustration, discrimination, setbacks, and a lack of opportunities.
There are various issues you need to think about when deciding on career choices. For example:
(i) What are your goals, both professionally and personally?
(ii) How ambitious are you?
(iii) Do you have geographic limitations?
(iv) Do you have a support network?
(v) Are you willing to compromise?
(vi) Do you want to become a leader in your field?
(vii) Are you willing to pursue opportunities?
(viii) Are you willing to stand up for yourself in difficult situations?
To advance yourself, it’s very important to have confidence in your abilities and establish yourself as a valued and independent contributor to your field. You need to promote your work and yourself in a fashion that gets you known in your field but doesn’t alienate your colleagues. Social skills and communication skills are essential.
The HERizon Leadership Network is a not-for-profit interest group dedicated to advancing the leadership of women and under-represented individuals in drug discovery. It works to break down barriers, open doors to opportunity, and amplify women’s voices in a field where their contributions might be overlooked.
