Theresa Rossouw
Professor Theresa Rossouw is based at the Department of Immunology at the University of Pretoria. She primarily works in the field of HIV and related infections, specifically interested in HIV-associated drug resistance and systemic immune activation. Theresa is currently involved in a study assessing differences in clinical and immunological profiles of HIV-infected and -uninfected patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
CloseMieke Van Der Mescht
Mieke van der Mescht obtained her BSc Hons in Haematology and MSc in Medical Immunology at the University of Pretoria. She is currently completing her PhD in Medical Immunology under the supervision of Professor Theresa Rossouw. Her study aims to determine and compare the immunological profiles and clinical outcomes of individuals living with HIV and HIV-uninfected patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 using flow cytometric and cytokine analysis.

Since the start of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in March 2020, South Africa has experienced four COVID-19 waves, each dominated by a different variant of the virus: Ancestral, Beta, Delta, and Omicron.
Analysis of SARS-CoV-2 patients admitted during each of these waves has provided insight into how immune response and clinical outcomes differs between variants.
This webinar showcases the analysis of 158 SARS-CoV-2 positive patients admitted to hospitals in Tshwane, South Africa, during the four COVID-19 waves.
You'll learn how T-cell and monocyte phenotyping was performed on a CytoFLEX flow cytometer and the data analyzed using Kaluza v2.1.2 and the Cytobank platform to uncover changes in non-classical monocytes, expression of co-stimulatory and co-inhibitory molecules, and CD4:CD8 ratios between waves.
Register now to discover the discrete differences in monocyte and T-cell phenotypes observed across the four COVID-19 waves in South Africa, and how this provides insight into the immune responses elicited by the different SARS-CoV-2 variants.
In this webinar, you will learn:
- Valuable insights into the immune responses elicited by the different SARS-CoV-2 variants;
- Details on how the immunological profiles and clinical outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 patients were determined and compared;
- How T-cell and monocyte phenotypes and immunological profiles of SARS-CoV-2 patients differed across the four COVID-19 waves;
- About the application of the CytoFlex flow cytometer for T-cell and monocyte phenotyping, and data analysis conducted using Kaluza v2.1.2 and the Cytobank platform.
